To come into this posture:

  1. Begin in dolphin pose pressing strong into the forearms.

  2. Shift the weight forward and gaze forward as you pop the legs over head and progressively move into a backbend.

  3. The feet either float over head or the toes can touch the top of the head.


***It is not recommended to do this pose if you have high blood pressure or heart disease, if you have shoulder pain, if you have vertigo, or if you are a beginner.


In the full expression of this pose, Purnavrischikasasana, the Scorpio bends their knees, takes the toes to the head, and enters into a deep backbend. This resembles the image of the real scorpion arthropod, especially when they are about to attack their prey. When in the wild and about to sting, the literal scorpion curls its tail and arches its body just like in this pose. Mystics of the past have compared this posture to a psychological metaphor. Feet towards the head represents the feet stamping out the negative characteristics in the head such as arrogance, anger, hatred, jealously, and malice. These traits are venomous, equally as poisonous as the venom in real scorpions. This posture is recommended for yogis who have a Scorpio placement. This yoga pose will you to develop humility, calmness, and tolerance. When the Scorpio is balanced in their emotional body, they are extremely wise, nurturing, and accomplished. Scorpio people, try to play around with this posture to remind yourself of your power. You have the strength to choose which side you present to the world, so try to choose the side of compassion and connection.
